New Delhi, August 3: The acquittal of former BJP MP and ex-President of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, by the Rouse Avenue Court in a sexual harassment case filed by female wrestlers has sparked a wave of political reactions. The ruling party hailed it as a “victory for truth and justice,” while opposition leaders refrained from direct comments on the verdict, instead raising concerns about the judicial process and the sentiments of female athletes.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra targeted the central government following the decision, stating that while the government speaks of empowering women and supporting the youth, the message sent by such cases is alarming. She highlighted a significant gap between the government’s claims and reality.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor responded cautiously to the court’s ruling, expressing his reluctance to comment on the judicial decision. He emphasized the need to allow the judicial process to unfold and suggested waiting for any potential appeals against the verdict. Tharoor remarked that if no appeal is filed, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh would be considered acquitted in the eyes of the law, adding that justice should not only occur but also be visibly evident.
Mahua Maji, a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, expressed her respect for the judiciary and refrained from criticizing the court’s decision. However, she noted that there is disappointment among female athletes and a large section of society regarding the verdict. Maji pointed out that the women wrestlers who have brought glory to the nation internationally had long protested and gone on hunger strikes to voice their concerns.
She mentioned that many questions remain in people’s minds regarding the investigation and the evidence collected, and several women fear that this ruling could adversely affect cases of harassment faced by young female athletes striving to advance in sports.
Meanwhile, BJP MP and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s son, Karan Bhushan Singh, welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a victory for justice and truth. He expressed gratitude to those who supported them during challenging times and stated that those who demanded strict action against his father should now acknowledge that if injustice occurred, he deserves respect.
In another statement, Karan Bhushan Singh claimed this victory is not just for their family but for justice itself, framing it as a win for Sanatanis, Hindus, and wrestlers, while also addressing the protesters. However, he refrained from commenting on the female wrestlers who made the allegations.
BJP MP Dinesh Sharma also welcomed the court’s ruling, asserting that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has always advocated for women’s respect, which is evident in his behavior. Sharma affirmed that the Indian judiciary is impartial and its decisions should be respected.
Sanjay Singh Bablu, President of the Wrestling Federation of India, reacted to the verdict by stating that the allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh were entirely baseless and politically motivated. He claimed that the accusations aimed to seize control of the wrestling federation and reiterated that Brij Bhushan has consistently maintained his innocence, even stating he would hang himself if proven guilty. The court’s ruling has validated his claims.
