BBK Electronics smartphone brands such as OnePlus, Oppo and Realme are planning to introduce ultrasonic fingerprint sensors in their flagship models.
In a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo, a well-informed source from Digital Chat Station claimed that smartphone manufacturers are expected to use a new technology called biometric authentication in their flagship products.
What are ultrasonic biometric fingerprint sensors and how is it different
Smartphone manufacturers have been offering under-display fingerprint authentication on several models for several years. In this system, the phone brand uses two types of fingerprint sensors: an ultrasonic sensor and an optical sensor. Ultrasonic sensors are usually found in high-end flagship phones.
When you press your finger on the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, it uses ultrasound to create a 3D map of your fingerprint under the screen.
This technology increases security and makes you less vulnerable to identity theft. The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is water and dirt resistant and achieves high recognition accuracy.
However, these scanners are expensive to manufacture and have a more complicated process than optical fingerprint scanners.
Optical fingerprint scanners, on the other hand, are inexpensive, secure, and use light to capture a two-dimensional image of your fingerprint.
Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors on OnePlus, Oppo and Realme phones
According to a Weibo post, OnePlus, Oppo and Realme are working on an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner for their devices. If successful, the technology is expected to replace optical fingerprint scanners in the company’s flagship devices in the next few days. Furthermore, the additional information did not reveal any further details.
Currently, Samsung Galaxy S23 series phones, iQ00 12 Pro, Meizu 21/21 Pro and other phones use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor with this technology.
Previous reports suggested that the new Xiaomi 15 series, which will come with the 4th generation Snapdragon 8 chipset, will also come with Godix’s single-point ultrasonic fingerprint scanner technology.
