Office of missing persons commences public consultations from Mannar

OMP Chairman Saliya Peiris said in a statement that the consultations are a vital step in the process to operationalize the office in its search for missing and disappeared persons.

Setting up of OMP is a key milestone in current government’s promise to address the alleged war crimes committed during the LTTE war. Hundreds of families have been protesting to locate their friends and relatives who disappeared during the three-decade war.

The consultations will be held with the families of missing and disappeared persons, activists, professionals and organizations working on the issue.

The statement said OMP understands the urgency and frustration of the families and individuals but requested their patience to ensure vital processes are put in place in order to ensure an effective response and to avoid ad hoc measures. It said the consultations mark the start of the outreach process of the OMP and are a positive indication that the search for missing and disappeared persons are underway.
