FBI Links North Korea to $6.3 Billion Binance Crypto Hack
The FBI has announced that North Korean hackers were behind the $6.3 billion theft from Binance, marking a significant cybersecurity incident.

NEW DELHI, Nov 2: The FBI reported that North Korean hackers were responsible for the theft of over $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, marking one of the largest digital asset hacks ever. This confirmation represents the first acknowledgment from U.S. authorities regarding the regime’s involvement in this incident.
The FBI’s investigation identified the hacking operation as “TraderTraitor,” which occurred earlier this week. The hackers primarily converted their stolen assets into Ethereum, according to the FBI, in collaboration with the U.S. Secret Service and the IRS Criminal Investigation.
U.S. officials have urged cryptocurrency exchanges and blockchain analytics firms to block transactions linked to the stolen funds. The laundering of these assets through decentralized finance platforms and instant exchange services is a key concern for authorities.
In response to the hack, Binance temporarily paused deposits and withdrawals. The exchange’s founder, Changpeng Zhao, described the situation as appearing to involve a hack. Following the theft, Binance announced it had already replenished about 90% of the stolen amount, committing to cover the losses for its users. “Binance will absorb the financial impact of these stolen funds, not our users,” the exchange stated.
Eric Schiffer, chairman of Patriarch and Reputation Management Consultants, underscored the seriousness of the incident, labeling the breach as one of the largest thefts in history. He expressed concern about future cybersecurity threats, particularly as artificial intelligence advances. Schiffer warned, “I think the bloodbath of AI hacking is to come,” indicating that more sophisticated cyberattacks could emerge.
President Donald Trump also commented on the situation, stating that his administration is gathering more information about North Korea’s possible involvement. He noted, “We’re learning about it. We don’t know if it’s North Korea, but if it is, we’ll talk to them about it.”
