Mumbai, May 9: In the world of music, some duos not only deliver hit songs but also create history. One such famous pair in Hindi cinema is Shankar-Jaikishan, whose melodies continue to resonate in the hearts of many. In an upcoming episode of the reality show Indian Idol, lyricist and poet Manoj Muntashir shared an intriguing story related to this iconic duo.
Muntashir recounted that the meeting between Shankar and Jaikishan was nothing short of a cinematic tale. Shankarji had come to Mumbai from Hyderabad in search of work and spent months circling the office of a film producer without any success. One day, he noticed a young man (Jaikishan) quietly sitting in a corner of the office sofa. When Shankarji asked him why he was there, the young man replied that he was also looking for work.
Upon inquiring about his skills, Jaikishan mentioned that he played the harmonium. This sparked a conversation between them, leading to a budding friendship. At that time, Shankarji was playing the tabla at Prithvi Theatre. He introduced Jaikishan to Prithviraj Kapoor, saying, “Papaji, this is a very talented boy; please give him work.” Following this, they began collaborating.
Muntashir further elaborated that during this period, they met Raj Kapoor, who was working on his second film. His first film, Aag, had music composed by Ram Ganguly, and for a while, Shankar-Jaikishan served as his assistants. Eventually, Raj Kapoor offered this new duo the opportunity to compose music for his second film, marking the beginning of a partnership that would dominate the music scene for decades to come.
Muntashir noted that what started at Prithvi Theatre soon led to long queues outside theaters, eager to hear their songs. The magic of their music transports listeners back to a bygone era.
Shankar-Jaikishan gifted Hindi cinema numerous memorable songs throughout the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Iconic tracks like “Aawara Hoon” from Aawara, “Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua” from Shri 420, “Ye Mera Prem Patra” from Sangam, and “Baharon Phool Barsao” from Suraj remain evergreen classics. Their tunes encapsulated every shade of love, pain, joy, and life itself.
