Madhya Pradesh Heatwave Alert: 7 Cities Cross 40°C for First Time This Season

BHOPAL — With March drawing to a close, Madhya Pradesh is firmly in the grip of summer. For the first time this season, seven cities in the state have recorded daytime temperatures above 40°C, marking a significant escalation in heat levels. Strong sunlight and rising night temperatures have intensified discomfort across urban and rural areas alike.

Narmadapuram Hottest at 40.9°C, More Cities Join the 40-Degree Club

On March 27, Narmadapuram topped the charts at 40.9°C, followed by Ratlam and Barwani (Talun) at 40.2°C, and Naugaon, Shivpuri, Guna, and Damoh, all recording 40°C or more. This temperature rise signals the beginning of a prolonged hot spell for central India.

Other major cities saw soaring mercury levels as well:

  • Gwalior: 39.9°C

  • Ujjain: 39°C

  • Bhopal: 38.8°C

  • Indore: 38.2°C

  • Jabalpur: 38°C

In total, over a dozen cities, including Khajuraho, Dhar, Satna, Mandla, Tikamgarh, Seoni, and Betul, saw temperatures at or above 39°C.

Rising Night Temperatures Add to Discomfort

Not only are days becoming hotter, but nights are also warming, offering little respite from the heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) observed that many regions are experiencing minimum temperatures 1°C to 4.5°C above normal, adding to overall heat stress.

IMD Forecast: Slight Dip in Temperatures on March 28–29

While the state is currently under intense heat conditions, IMD has offered a brief reprieve, predicting that temperatures may drop by 2–3°C on March 28 and 29, especially during daytime and nighttime hours.

However, this is expected to be temporary, with overall conditions likely to remain hot and dry into early April. No significant rainfall has been forecast in the near term.

Precautions Urged as Summer Intensifies

With rising temperatures and no imminent rain, residents are advised to:

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day

  • Avoid direct sun exposure, especially during 12 PM – 4 PM

  • Wear lightweight and breathable clothing

  • Take extra care of children, elderly, and outdoor workers
