Raipur, December 3 – Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad created history during the second ODI match against South Africa on Wednesday. The duo forged a magnificent 195-run partnership for the third wicket, setting a new record for India’s highest partnership for any wicket against South Africa in ODI format.
The Kohli-Gaikwad pair surpassed the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik, who had added 194 runs for the second wicket against South Africa in Gwalior on February 24, 2010.
In the match played at Raipur, Virat Kohli faced 93 balls to score 102 runs, hitting 2 sixes and 7 fours. This marked his 53rd ODI century. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed after scoring 105 runs off 83 balls, including 2 sixes and 12 fours.
Gaikwad completed his century in 77 balls, making it the second-fastest ODI century by an Indian batsman against South Africa. Yusuf Pathan tops this list, having scored a century in just 68 balls against South Africa at Centurion in 2011.
South Africa won the toss at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium and elected to bowl first. India scored 358 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Kohli played a brilliant innings of 102 runs off 93 balls, while Gaikwad contributed 105 runs off 83 balls. Both players shared a 195-run partnership off 156 balls for the third wicket.
Apart from these two, captain KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 66 runs off 43 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja played an unbeaten knock of 24 runs off 27 balls. For South Africa, Marco Jansen claimed the maximum wickets with 2 dismissals.
