Mumbai, May 10: Union Minister Ramdas Athawale expressed confidence that justice will prevail in West Bengal if the BJP comes to power. He noted that Suvendu Adhikari, who previously aligned with Mamata Banerjee, joined the BJP in 2020 and led the party in the state elections, where the BJP secured around 207 seats. Athawale claimed that Banerjee’s grip on Bengal has weakened, attributing the state’s economic decline to her leadership and alleging a culture of ‘goondaraj’ (rule of goons) under her governance. He emphasized that the public has expressed their anger through voting, highlighting that Banerjee has not resigned despite the electoral mandate, a situation he stated has never occurred before. In contrast, he mentioned that MK Stalin in Tamil Nadu resigned after losing the mandate.
Athawale reiterated Prime Minister Modi’s vision of transforming Bengal into ‘Sonar Bangla’ (Golden Bengal) and assured that good work will be done to ensure justice for all, making Bengal a strong state in the country.
On the Marathi language issue, Athawale supported Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik’s suggestion that all rickshaw drivers in Mumbai should learn Marathi. He clarified that while this is the government’s stance, there is no intention of coercion. The idea is to promote Marathi as the state language, encouraging those whose mother tongues are Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, and Bhojpuri to learn Marathi as well. He also praised Haji Arafat Sheikh for initiating efforts to teach Marathi to taxi and rickshaw drivers, calling it a very positive step.
Regarding the arrest of Punjab Minister Sanjeev Arora by the ED, Athawale stated that the ED and CBI operate based on evidence. He believes that if a minister has been arrested, there must be a legal basis or substantial evidence behind the action taken by the ED.
