Ranchi, May 26 – Residents of Jharkhand can expect unstable weather conditions over the coming days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the state until May 31. The ongoing pre-monsoon activity has already provided much-needed relief from the intense summer heat, and the trend is likely to continue.

Pre-Monsoon Relief Brings Down Temperatures
Over the past 24 hours, widespread rainfall in Ranchi and other parts of the state has brought a perceptible drop in temperatures and added humidity to the atmosphere. Ranchi recorded a maximum temperature of 30°C on Sunday, which is around 7°C below the seasonal normal, while Medininagar registered a high of 33°C, down by 8°C from usual levels.
According to Abhishek Anand, scientist at IMD Ranchi, pre-monsoon showers will intensify from May 28 to 31 due to the influence of a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal. This is expected to bring moderate rainfall, isolated lightning strikes, and strong winds across several districts.
Yellow Alert: Thunderstorms, Rain, and Winds at 40–50 kmph
The IMD has issued a yellow alert, warning residents of possible thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds blowing at 40–50 km/h. While these weather conditions are not considered extreme, people are advised to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas or during outdoor activities.
Rainfall activity will be sporadic and interspersed with dry spells, but localized intense showers and lightning cannot be ruled out. Travelers and commuters in affected districts are advised to stay updated on local weather forecasts.
Rainfall Records & Temperature Extremes
In the past 24 hours:
-
Ranchi recorded 11 mm of rainfall, with cloudy skies and moderate rain making for a pleasant Sunday.
-
Pakur’s Littipara witnessed the highest rainfall in the state at 64.4 mm.
-
Daltonganj reported the highest temperature at 37.3°C, while Latehar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 21.1°C.
Outlook
As Jharkhand braces for more pre-monsoon showers through the week, the IMD suggests that the ongoing rainfall and temperature moderation are positive indicators of an early monsoon arrival. With cloud cover, cool winds, and frequent showers forecast till the end of the month, residents can expect some respite from the summer heat, albeit with caution due to storm-related risks.
