Rajsamand, 11 August (HS) – Tensions flared in Rajsamand on Monday after the death of a jeweller during police questioning at Kankroli police station. Family members and local jewellers staged protests, demanding a government job for the deceased’s kin and a thorough investigation into the incident.

Khubchand Soni (50), a jeweller from Gadar Mala in Bhilwara district, had been called to the police station on Sunday afternoon for verification related to the purchase of stolen goods. While at the station, his health reportedly deteriorated, and he later passed away. His body is currently kept at the district hospital.
On Monday, family members gathered at RK Hospital, accusing the Kankroli police of being responsible for his death. Protesters, including trader associations, are demanding ₹1 crore compensation, a government job for a family member, and an intensive probe. By Monday afternoon, no agreement had been reached between the police and the protesters, delaying the post-mortem.
The deceased’s nephew, Himanshu Soni, said the protest would not end without justice and compensation. During the demonstration, Soni’s son, Pradyuman, collapsed from shock and was admitted to the hospital.
Superintendent of Police Mamta Gupta stated that a charge sheet had previously been filed against the jeweller for purchasing stolen goods. She added that an inquiry has been ordered, and further action will be taken after the report is received.
