Jasprit Bumrah Suffers Back Spasm, Returns After Scan on Day 2 of Sydney Test
Sydney, January 4 – Team India faced a moment of concern on Day 2 of the Sydney Test when captain and lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah left the field due to a back spasm shortly after the lunch session. Bumrah was seen heading out of the stadium for a scan but returned to the dressing room during the final session of play.

Bumrah’s Injury: A Cause for Concern
Bumrah, who has been a key performer for India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, bowled eight overs on Day 2, including the crucial dismissal of Marnus Labuschagne. However, at the start of the post-lunch session, he bowled just one over before leaving the field due to discomfort.
During the day-end press conference, pacer Prasidh Krishna confirmed that Bumrah had experienced a back spasm. “He felt a bit of stiffness in his back, but he’s being monitored closely,” said Krishna.
Heavy Workload Taking a Toll on Bumrah
Bumrah’s injury scare comes after a grueling workload in the series. The Indian captain has bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests, slightly less than his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins, who has delivered 152 overs. Despite the heavy workload, Bumrah has been India’s standout bowler, claiming 32 wickets at an exceptional average of 13.06.
His relentless effort with the ball has often been necessitated by the team’s lack of bowling depth, putting him at greater risk of injury. This latest back spasm has raised concerns about his availability for the remainder of the Test, with India already facing an uphill battle in the match.
India’s Position in the Test: A Tough Challenge Ahead
At the close of play, Team India trails by 145 runs in the third innings, with only four wickets remaining. If Bumrah is unable to bowl in the second innings, it will significantly weaken India’s chances of defending a modest total. The team will need to dig deep to avoid defeat in this crucial final Test of the series.
An official medical update from Team India’s medical staff is awaited, which will determine whether Bumrah can resume bowling on Day 3.
