New Delhi, March 2: The South African cricket team has secured a spot in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup, remaining unbeaten in both the group stage and the Super 8. Captain Aiden Markram has been a successful batsman for South Africa, emerging as one of the standout openers in the tournament and providing solid starts in most matches.
Former South African captain Faf du Plessis stated that Markram has improved as an opener after playing that role for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL.
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, du Plessis remarked, “Playing as an opener for LSG in the IPL has given him the habit of playing effectively in the first six overs. Markram’s powerplay strike rate in IPL 2025 was 151.13, which was better than his opening partners Quinton de Kock, Rohit Sharma, and Will Jacks. His outstanding performance for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025 has been crucial in making him a successful T20 opener.”
Du Plessis emphasized that Markram has done a remarkable job in increasing his strike rate and showcasing technically sound gameplay. He has proven to the team management that he can perform impressively in both opening and middle-order roles. His experience and the freedom granted under the impact-player rule in the IPL have made him exceptional in T20 cricket.
Not only is Aiden Markram technically strong, but his strike rate, adaptability, and captaincy skills have made him a key player for South Africa in the 2026 T20 World Cup. He has now been designated as South Africa’s full-time opener, while the team management is sending Ryan Rickelton, the highest run-scorer in SA20, to bat at number 3.
Markram is currently the leading run-scorer for South Africa in this World Cup, having scored 268 runs at an average of 53.60 and a strike rate of 175.16, including three half-centuries in seven innings.
