Udaipur, July 24: India now manufactures nearly 99.2 per cent of all mobile phones exported from the country, with mobile phones emerging as the country’s largest export item. Mobile phone exports have increased from Rs 1,500 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2.59 lakh crore in 2026, registering a 165-fold growth.

The information was shared by Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada in the Lok Sabha in response to a question raised by MP Dr Mannalal Rawat.
Mobile Production Sees 33-Fold Growth
The minister said mobile phone production in India has grown from Rs 18,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 6.27 lakh crore in 2026, marking a 33-fold increase.
He added that the electronics manufacturing industry is now estimated to provide employment to around 25 lakh people across the country.
Government Focused on Semiconductor Ecosystem
Jitin Prasada said the Government of India’s semiconductor strategy is based on the vision of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. The strategy aims to develop a complete manufacturing ecosystem, including product assembly, sub-assembly, components, chip design, fabrication and packaging.
He said the semiconductor industry is a foundational sector supporting industries such as manufacturing, consumer electronics, defence, telecommunications and automobiles, while also driving technological innovation, economic growth and strategic self-reliance.
Rs 76,000 Crore Semicon India Programme
Recognising the importance of the semiconductor sector, the government launched the Semicon India Programme in January 2022 with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore.
The programme covers semiconductor fabs, display fabs, semiconductor packaging and the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme for semiconductor design.
Under the programme, the government has approved 12 semiconductor manufacturing projects across Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Punjab, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, involving total investment commitments of nearly Rs 1.64 lakh crore.
These projects are expected to generate around 32,000 direct employment opportunities, depending on the level of factory automation.
Support for Chip Design and Start-ups
The minister said 24 semiconductor design projects have also been approved for financial assistance.
Additionally, 105 start-ups and MSMEs have been provided access to industry-standard Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. So far, these chip design tools have been used for more than 8.7 million hours.
Cabinet Approves Semicon 2.0
Building on the success of Semicon India 1.0, the Union Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 on July 15, 2026, with an outlay of Rs 1.275 lakh crore.
The initiative aims to establish a self-reliant and globally competitive semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem in India.
