India Clinch Oval Thriller, Level Series 2-2: Siraj’s 5-Wicket Haul Seals Victory on Final Day

London – In a nail-biting finish, India defeated England by 6 runs on the final day of the Oval Test, leveling the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. Mohammad Siraj emerged as the hero, taking five wickets in the fourth innings to script a dramatic turnaround for India.

On Monday, England needed just 35 runs with 4 wickets in hand. Siraj’s sensational spell saw him take 3 of those wickets, snatching victory from England’s grasp and sealing a memorable win for India.

The Test had started with England choosing to bowl first on Thursday. India posted 224 in their first innings, while England replied with 247, taking a slender 23-run lead. In their second outing, India bounced back strongly to score 396, setting England a target of 374 runs.

England looked well on course at 300/3, with Harry Brook anchoring the chase with a century. However, once Brook fell, India clawed back into the game, reducing England to 354/8.

Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue tried to pull off a final resistance, but Siraj’s fiery bowling brought an end to England’s chase. Even a last-ditch effort by injured Chris Woakes, who came out to bat left-handed, couldn’t prevent the defeat.

India won the second and fifth Tests of the series, while England claimed the first and third. The fourth Test had ended in a draw.

Interesting Stats:

  • For the first time in Test history, nine batters have scored over 400 runs in a single series. This includes five Indian and four English players.

  • This is only the second Test series in history to witness over 7,000 runs scored. The previous instance was the 1993 Ashes, where 7,221 runs were scored across six matches.
