Seoul, January 9 – Hyundai Motor Group announced on Friday that it has begun mass production of a new on-device artificial intelligence (AI) chip designed for autonomous robots. This chip enables robots to operate independently without relying on external internet or network connections, allowing them to work faster and more securely.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the chip, named Edge Brain, was unveiled on Thursday at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. It is the result of a three-year collaboration between Hyundai’s Robotics Lab and South Korean AI chip manufacturer DeepX.
The chip consumes very low power, less than five watts, yet it empowers robots to instantly understand their surroundings and make decisions on their own without the need for cloud or network connectivity.
Hyundai Motor stated that this new technology is already being applied in several projects at its Robotics Lab. These include a facial recognition system called Faeci and a delivery robot currently in the demonstration phase.
Looking ahead, the chip is expected to be used in AI security solutions and next-generation mobile robots. Hyundai aims to deploy it through pilot projects at locations such as airports and hospitals.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group’s Chairman Euisun Chung met with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang during CES 2026. This meeting has raised hopes for future collaboration between the two companies on autonomous driving technologies.
Reports also mention that the two executives previously met in Seoul last October, in a meeting that included Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong. This encounter took place when Jensen Huang visited South Korea to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
