Patna, July 23 — The INDIA Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert forecasting heavy to very Heavy Rainfall across several districts of Bihar over the next seven days. The anticipated weather activity is attributed to the development of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which may evolve into a low-pressure area by July 24, potentially intensifying into a cyclone.

Southern Bihar to Witness Maximum Impact
According to the Patna Meteorological Centre, southern Bihar districts such as Gaya, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, and Arwal are expected to receive widespread heavy rainfall starting Thursday, with the spell likely to continue until July 28. These areas may also experience strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h and lightning strikes, which could further intensify localized weather hazards.
In contrast, northern Bihar is expected to receive moderate rainfall, with the southern districts bearing the brunt of the system’s impact. The rainfall is also expected to result in a drop of up to 5°C in maximum temperatures, offering relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions.
Patna to See High Humidity, Followed by Rain
In the capital city Patna, the IMD predicts clear skies on Wednesday and Thursday, accompanied by severe heat and humidity. However, from Friday onwards, cloud cover will increase, and isolated rain with lightning is anticipated. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid working in open fields, and stay away from electrical poles.
Specific Alerts Issued for Multiple Districts
The weather office has issued specific warnings for Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Gaya, where heavy rainfall is expected on Thursday. Additionally, eastern and south-central Bihar may witness thunderstorm activity and strong winds on Wednesday.
Given the rising water levels in rivers such as the Ganga, Kosi, and Punpun, district administrations in flood-prone areas have been placed on high alert. Localities such as Diara, Maner, and Fatuha in and around Patna are already witnessing waterlogging conditions, which could worsen with the upcoming spell of rain.
Cyclonic Circulation Over Bay of Bengal Under Watch
As per IMD updates, the cyclonic circulation over the northwestern Bay of Bengal is likely to develop into a low-pressure area by July 24, which may further intensify into a cyclonic storm. While forecast models are still uncertain regarding its exact intensity and trajectory, coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal are likely to be directly affected. However, its extended influence could bring significant rainfall to Bihar as well.
