Jaipur has been experiencing heavy rain since early morning. The intense rainfall has caused waterlogging in several areas. The monsoon, which has been fluctuating between light and heavy showers, has now turned into a serious problem in Rajasthan. Schools in five districts—Jaipur, Karauli, Bharatpur, Dausa, and Sawai Madhopur—have been closed today (August 12) due to the weather.
In Sawai Madhopur’s Bauli sub-division, the earthen embankment of a dam in Hindupara village broke around 3 AM on Monday due to the strong water flow. The breach, about 3-4 feet wide, led to water rapidly flooding the surrounding areas, causing widespread inundation.
Due to the flooding, the bridge connecting over 20 villages in Hindupara and Hathdoli Panchayats has become impassable, with water flowing six feet above it. The dam water is now flowing into the Nigoh River, raising concerns about the submergence of villages like Jatawati, Didwadi, and Jolanda. The Hindupara Panchayat had constructed this dam under a water conservation initiative.
In the last 24 hours, 20 people have lost their lives across the state. Of these, 18 drowned, while a father and son died when their house collapsed. The deaths occurred in Bharatpur (7), Jaipur (5), Jhunjhunu (3), Karauli (3), Jodhpur (1), and Banswara (1). Most of the dams in the affected districts are overflowing. There is a forecast of heavy rain today and tomorrow as well. An orange alert has been issued for heavy rain in Jaipur and six other districts today, while a yellow alert is in place for 14 districts.
