Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold have an extensive software support period of seven years. This is unprecedented in the mobile world, so the company’s commitment in this regard is commendable. We bet that most people will change their smartphone before these seven years are up.
But when it comes to smartwatches, Google’s approach is completely different. The original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 both come with a three-year software support guarantee, and the Pixel Watch 3 is in exactly the same position.
Of course, it’s possible that Google will release some updates to the Google Pixel Watch 3 even after October 2027 (oddly enough, even though the watch was announced in August, the month of the deadline), but that’s not certain. From this point of view, there is an interesting difference in the treatment of smartphones and smartwatches, even if we are all talking about smart devices.
Perhaps more people are expected to replace smartwatches than smartphones. Or maybe it’s just a pessimistic calculation based on a much lower sales price. However, keep in mind that from a software perspective, the Pixel Watch won’t last as long as a Pixel smartphone.
