The Google Gemini app, a conversational artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by the company, is now available in India, the company’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Tuesday.
The app, which Google first released in the US in February, gives users access to the power of Gemini, Google’s Large Language Model (LLM) family. This program is available to users in English and not in Hindi. Additionally, Google Gemini Advanced also offers support for these languages.
The Gemini app is coming to India
In a blog post, Google announced that the Gemini app is now available on the Google Play Store in India. It supports a total of 10 languages: English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. To access the AI chatbot, users can download the Gemini app or join via Google Assistant.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Additionally, according to Google, Gemini Advanced, LLM for Google One subscriptions will also be updated with a larger token context window. This app leverages the features of Gemini 1.5 Pro in English as well as the same 9 Indian languages supported by the Gemini app.
With Gemini Advanced, users can upload up to 1,500 pages of documents or 100 emails and ask an AI chatbot to summarize them. It also provides content-based insights. Google says Gemini Advanced can now “clean, examine, analyze and visualize” data from spreadsheets created in Google Sheets, CSV or Excel.
The company says these files are not used to train artificial intelligence models and remain private to users. The Gemini app was introduced to Android users in India through the Google Play Store, while iOS users can only access it through the Google app.
Gemini on Google Messages
Google also announced the launch of Gemini in the Google Messages app in India. While the feature was previously available to international users, users in India can now also chat with AI chatbots in the Messages app. The feature is rolling out to some devices, but requires an Android phone with at least 6GB of RAM.
