Kolkata, August 17: Authorities at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport seized a significant quantity of gold valued at over ₹1 crore on Monday. During a raid on a flight arriving from Bangkok, approximately 900 grams of gold were recovered, with a market value of around ₹1.35 crore. Two passengers have been arrested in connection with this incident.
Officials from the airport police station are currently interrogating the suspects. An investigation has been initiated to determine the source of the gold smuggling. According to police sources, the two passengers arrived in Kolkata from Bangkok on Monday. They had been under surveillance based on prior intelligence received from confidential sources. Following suspicion, they were questioned, during which they admitted to possessing the gold. The recovered gold is initially estimated to be 24-carat.
Authorities suspect that an interstate gold smuggling gang may be involved in this incident. The police are investigating where such a large quantity of gold was sourced and its intended destination. They are also looking into other individuals who may be connected to this case. The recovery of gold worth crores at the airport has created a sensation.
Previously, on August 6, police had seized a substantial amount of gold and diamond jewelry valued at ₹1 crore from the same airport. Jewelry embedded with rubies and emeralds was also recovered, leading to the arrest of one suspect. This significant haul of gold and diamonds was found in domestic cargo.
In the wake of this incident, security at the airport has been tightened, and monitoring of passengers has been increased.
