According to online announcements, iOS 18, Apple’s latest iPhone operating system, increases the performance of the phone’s neural engine by up to 25 percent.
Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on June 10, 2024, the update is expected to bring a number of artificial intelligence (AI) features to the iPhone as well as other quality of life improvements. As part of the AI initiative, the phone’s neural engine has reportedly been improved.

iOS 18 brings better NPU performance
According to @lafaiel, this results in about a 25 percent improvement in the performance of the phone’s machine learning capabilities.
The CoreML Neural Engine hypothesis was tested on benchmarks that ran machine learning tasks on a mobile phone using hardware such as the CPU and NPU (or Neural Engine as Apple calls it). Although the NPU works like a graphics processing unit (GPU), it does not accelerate the graphics, but rather improves the capabilities of the neural network.
iOS 18 is expected to bring several major updates to the iPhone, centered around new artificial intelligence features that the company calls “Apple Intelligence.” To its credit, the update offers system-wide text generation and summarization features. iPhone also supports imaging with the new Image Playground app. And Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, is getting smarter through on-screen experiences.
compatibility
It is worth noting that only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with the A17 Pro SoC will receive new artificial intelligence functions in the systems. While Apple has released iOS 18 Developer Update Beta 1 to users worldwide, the Apple Intelligence features will be available later this year, and initially only in US English.
