Bhopal, October 25 (Udaipur Kiran) – The grand festival of Chhath Puja, dedicated to Surya (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, began in Madhya Pradesh’s capital Bhopal on Saturday. Known as a festival of faith, discipline, purity, and gratitude towards nature, the four-day celebration will continue from October 25 to 28.

According to Hindu tradition, devotees believe that sincere worship of the Sun brings health, prosperity, and peace. The festival, which begins on Kartik Shukla Chaturthi and ends on Saptami, is considered one of the most spiritually pure celebrations in Indian culture.
52 Ghats in Bhopal Prepared for the Holy Rituals
The Bhopal Municipal Corporation and district administration have made elaborate arrangements for devotees at 52 ghats, including Sheetaldas Ki Bagiya, Kamla Park, Vardhman Park (Sunset Point), Khatalapura Ghat, Kali Mandir Ghat, Prempura Ghat, Hathaikheda Dam, Barkheda, and Ghoda Pachhad Dam.
Authorities have ensured cleanliness, lighting, barricading, drinking water, mobile toilets, and changing rooms. Municipal teams worked late into the night on Friday to complete preparations.
Massive Turnout Expected
According to Kunwar Prasad, president of the Bhojpuri Ekta Manch, lakhs of devotees from the city’s North Indian community are expected to gather at the ghats. “The enthusiasm for Chhath among devotees is unmatched. Markets are bustling with the sale of soop-dauri, thekua molds, fruits, and decorative items,” he said. The Bhojpuri Ekta Manch also conducted a cleanliness drive at Sheetaldas Ki Bagiya ahead of the rituals.
Spiritual and Cultural Significance
Acharya Bharatchandra Dubey explained, “Chhath teaches self-discipline and gratitude toward nature. When we worship the Sun — the life source of our solar system — we also awaken our inner strength, purity, and thankfulness.”
Security and Safety Arrangements
The administration has placed strict security measures at all ghats. Police teams, divers, and medical assistance units are deployed. Traffic police have created special parking and movement routes near major ghats. A control room has also been set up to respond swiftly in case of emergencies.
The Four Sacred Days of Chhath
-
Day 1 – Nahay-Khay (Purification Day):
Devotees bathe in rivers or ponds and prepare kaddu-bhat (pumpkin and rice) as the first holy meal. This marks the beginning of the fast. Only satvik food — free of onion and garlic — is consumed. -
Day 2 – Kharna (Fasting and Self-Control):
Devotees observe a day-long fast without water and offer gur-chawal ki kheer and gehu roti to the Sun at sunset before beginning a 36-hour waterless fast. -
Day 3 – Sandhya Arghya (Offering to the Setting Sun):
Families gather at riverbanks to offer arghya (water and milk) to the setting Sun with baskets filled with thekua, rice laddoos, fruits, and other offerings. The evening resonates with folk songs and devotional hymns. -
Day 4 – Usha Arghya and Paran (Morning Offering):
The fast concludes with prayers to the rising Sun, seeking health, happiness, and prosperity for the family. The fast is broken with prasad and satvik meals after offering arghya.
As the city glows with faith and devotion, Bhopal’s ghats have turned into centers of spiritual celebration, echoing chants and songs in honor of the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya.
