First Snowfall Brings Relief to Mandi Farmers

Udaipur Kiran: After nearly four months of drought, the first snowfall and light rains in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, have provided much-needed relief to local farmers and orchard owners.

The recent precipitation has raised hopes for improved agricultural and horticultural prospects in the district. This is especially beneficial for apple growers who rely heavily on winter chill and soil moisture.

The district’s highest mountain peaks are now covered with a thin layer of snow, including the sacred Shaitadhar mountain range. Light snowfall was reported in the higher areas of Karsog and Thunag subdivisions, creating a picturesque scene and marking the season’s first such event.

Due to heavy snowfall, the district administration has closed the gates of the Shikari Devi temple as a precaution and instructed shopkeepers and service providers to vacate the premises. However, officials confirmed that the Kamrunag temple gates remain officially open, with the situation under continuous review.

Light rains in the lower and mid-hill areas have softened the soil, aiding farmers in wheat sowing. Local farmers noted that the rain and snowfall have been beneficial for standing crops and plants, though they expressed the need for further rainfall.

Horticulture expert Dr. S. P. Bhardwaj described the snowfall and rain as a blessing for apple orchards. He explained that winter snowfall helps eliminate pathogens in the soil and plants, improves soil health, and ensures better fruit yield, acting as a natural remedy.

Meanwhile, departments including electricity and irrigation and public health have begun preparations. Senior officials have instructed staff to remain vigilant and ready to respond to any weather-related emergencies.

Farmers and orchard owners remain optimistic, hoping that another phase of widespread rain and snowfall will further strengthen the prospects for agriculture and horticulture.
