Mumbai, March 5 (Udaipur Kiran): England won the toss and elected to field first against India in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
With England choosing to bowl, the Indian team began their innings first in the crucial knockout clash. The match is being closely watched as both sides aim to secure a place in the tournament final.
Earlier in the tournament’s first semi-final, New Zealand defeated South Africa by nine wickets to qualify for the final.
England have had a mixed campaign in the tournament but still managed to win six matches so far. The team suffered only one defeat, which came against West Indies. India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, also reached the semi-finals after defeating West Indies in their final Super-8 match. India have lost just one match in the tournament so far, against South Africa, while winning six games and emerging as strong contenders for the title.
Notably, this is the third consecutive T20 World Cup in which India and England are facing each other in the semi-finals. The two teams also met at the same stage in the 2022 and 2024 editions. Interestingly, the team that won the India–England semi-final in the previous two tournaments went on to win the T20 World Cup title.
According to the pitch report at Wankhede Stadium, a light layer of grass is visible on the surface, which could trouble batters early in the innings. However, the pitch has traditionally been batting-friendly and another high-scoring match is expected.
Weather conditions in Mumbai are expected to remain hot, which could challenge the players during the game. A yellow alert had been issued in the city earlier due to rising temperatures, with the mercury expected to reach around 38–39 degrees Celsius during the afternoon before dropping slightly in the evening.
In T20 Internationals, India and England have faced each other 29 times so far. India have won 17 matches, while England have emerged victorious in 12 games.
