Kabul, February 25: A strong earthquake was felt in the border areas of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. The earthquake, which occurred on Wednesday, was reported to have a magnitude of 5.4 according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, with some reports indicating it reached 5.7.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the earthquake struck at 4:42 PM local time, causing panic among residents in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region. The epicenter of the quake was located at a latitude of 36.93 degrees north and a longitude of 71.61 degrees east, with a depth of 90.2 kilometers beneath the surface.
Tremors were also felt in neighboring Pakistan, with the country’s seismology department confirming that the shocks were experienced in Islamabad, Swat, Peshawar, Chitral, and other cities. Residents in affected areas reported strong jolts, prompting many to evacuate their homes and offices for safety in open spaces. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties so far.
This is not the first significant earthquake in the region; on February 20, a quake measuring 5.8 struck parts of Afghanistan, shaking Kabul and several other provinces. The US Geological Survey indicated that this earthquake’s epicenter was located about 38 kilometers northwest of the capital of Panjshir province, at a depth of 90 kilometers.
Afghanistan has a history of devastating earthquakes, with a 6.0 magnitude quake near the Pakistan border on August 31, 2025, resulting in over 2,000 fatalities. The Taliban government confirmed that more than 4,000 people lost their lives in a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on October 7, 2023, along with subsequent aftershocks.
