EAM speaks with Polish counterpart on evacuation of Indians

New Delhi, Feb 28 : With hundreds of Indian students being made to wait for hours on the Ukraine-Poland border and not allowed to cross over, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held talks with his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau and appreciated Poland’s facilitation of the evacuation of Indian students. In a tweet, he said that the Polish Foreign Minister’s words of support are very welcome. “Discussed the Ukraine developments with @RauZbigniew of Poland. “Appreciate Poland’s facilitation of evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine. His words of support in that regard are very welcome.” Hundreds of Indian students in Ukraine were stranded at the Poland border for several hours in freezing cold, waiting to cross over over the past two days. The students thronging the Shehyni-Medyka (southeastern Poland) border posted videos and messages on social media, explaining their predicament, and alleged that they were being stopped from crossing over while people of other nationalities were being allowed to do so. The Embassy of India in Warsaw issued an advisory asking students who want to be evacuated to reach the Shehyni-Medyka border by foot or bus/taxi. The MEA spokesperson on Monday said that a bus service has been started to take Indians stuck in Shehyni, in Lviv, western Ukraine, to other transit points for entry into Poland. The Indian embassy in Poland said that they are helping Indians stuck on the Ukraine side move away from crowded Shehyni to other checkpoints. RN
