New Delhi, May 1: A political controversy has erupted following allegations that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann attended a legislative session in an intoxicated state. Leaders from various parties have expressed strong reactions, questioning the Chief Minister’s conduct. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta condemned the incident as shameful.
In a video posted on the social media platform X, CM Gupta stated, “How can a state leader arrive intoxicated at the temple of democracy, embarrassing the entire state?” She noted that the public has witnessed Mann inebriated at numerous public events, but the recent assembly session showcased an extreme situation where he appeared visibly intoxicated while speaking.
Gupta questioned how someone who is often inebriated could protect the people of Punjab from substance abuse, asking if Arvind Kejriwal has any answers regarding the welfare of Punjab’s citizens under such leadership. She asserted that the upcoming 2027 elections would serve as the final nail in the coffin of what she termed a corrupt regime, driven by public sentiment.
Earlier, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva accused Mann of once again bringing shame to democracy. He claimed that Mann allegedly arrived intoxicated at a special one-day session of the Punjab Assembly for Labour Day.
Sachdeva raised concerns about the Assembly Speaker’s role, questioning why Mann was not stopped given his apparent intoxication and slurred speech. He emphasized that Mann’s behavior indicates a lack of confidence in the stability of his own government, noting that this is not the first instance of Mann reportedly appearing intoxicated in a legislative setting.
He further alleged that Mann had previously attended the Lok Sabha inebriated during his tenure as an MP. “Today, his staggering entrance and speech crossed all boundaries of decorum,” Sachdeva stated, adding that people from Punjab, Delhi, and across the country are shocked by this behavior and are demanding immediate disciplinary action against Mann from AAP’s national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal.
