New Delhi, August 2: Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has praised the central government’s commitment to freedom of expression. Following her statement, Maulana Sajid Rashidi, president of the All India Imam Association, claimed that Muslims have never accepted Taslima Nasreen.
In Kolkata, Nasreen remarked on the varying treatment she has received from different governments, noting that the current administration has allowed her to visit India. She also expressed concern over the alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, emphasizing education as the key solution.
In response to the renowned writer’s comments, Maulana Rashidi stated that Nasreen has always been embroiled in controversy due to her remarks about Prophet Muhammad and other religious matters, which have forced her to live outside the country. He questioned why she does not return to Bangladesh if she believes the Yunus government has failed, suggesting she should attempt to bring about change there. He criticized her for not having improved herself and asserted that Muslims have never accepted her. Rashidi appealed to Prime Minister Modi to prevent her from residing in the country, stating that her presence has hurt Muslim sentiments and that her statements should not be taken seriously.
Congress MP Tariq Anwar remarked that Rashidi’s comments reflect his personal opinion. He highlighted the efforts of various educational institutions, including madrasas and schools, in providing education to children, noting that the government lacks the resources to cater to all children in the country.
Former TMC spokesperson Riju Dutta pointed out that opposition parties often accuse the BJP of being anti-secular and disrespectful to other religions. However, Nasreen’s visit to West Bengal contradicts this narrative, as the BJP government welcomed her with respect. Dutta questioned what could be a greater example of secularism, given that the TMC had barred her from visiting for 15 years.
Congress MP Mohammad Javed suggested that there are numerous issues within the country that require discussion and resolution before focusing on external controversies.
