Chandigarh, October 19 (Udaipur Kiran): A Haryana Police constable was killed after being run over by a speeding truck at a police checkpoint in Panchkula on Saturday night. The driver tried to flee after the incident but was caught by the police shortly afterward.
The deceased constable has been identified as Deepak, a resident of Pillukheda in Jind district. He had joined the police force in 2023 and was posted at Surjanpur police station in Panchkula after completing his training in 2024. Recently, he had been transferred to the Crime Branch, but his relieving from the traffic unit was still pending.
According to police, the incident occurred during a vehicle checking drive near Chandimandir under a special campaign against drunk driving. ASI Somanath and Constable Deepak were inspecting vehicles when a high-speed truck approached the checkpoint. Despite being signaled to stop, the driver broke through the barricade, hitting Deepak and killing him on the spot.
Following the incident, the police team chased the truck, which was heading toward Yamunanagar. The driver had turned off the truck’s lights to avoid identification. The team managed to intercept the vehicle near Mathawali village.
ASI Somanath said that when officers attempted to arrest the driver, he tried to push them away and escape but was eventually overpowered. The accused has been identified as Dharmendra, a resident of Dasipur village in Sultanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Two others were present in the truck and reportedly urged Dharmendra to stop after the accident, but he ignored them and fled.
Investigating officer Praveen from Chandimandir police station said that the traffic team handed over the accused driver to them. A case has been registered against Dharmendra under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and he has been taken into custody.
