Jabalpur, May 2: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited Bargi Dam on Friday to meet the families affected by the recent cruise accident. He assured them of all possible assistance and promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
During his visit, the Chief Minister met with the relatives of the deceased and survivors, providing them with reassurance of support. He also visited the home of a victim to offer his condolences.
In a media interaction, CM Yadav stated, “A tragic incident has occurred in the Narmada River. So far, nine bodies have been recovered, and 28 individuals have been rescued. The state government stands firmly with all affected families.”
He also met Riaz Hussain, a survivor who was trapped inside the cruise for several hours before being safely rescued. Officials reported that the rescue operation continued throughout the night.
Mohan Yadav announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the causes of the accident and to assess whether safety protocols were followed. He emphasized that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible.
To prevent such incidents in the future, the government will implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for boating and adventure tourism activities to enhance safety measures.
The Chief Minister declared a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an additional ₹2 lakh in assistance.
Opposition leader Umang Singhar, who visited the site on Friday, accused the government of serious negligence regarding safety measures and demanded accountability. He stated, “This accident is a result of administrative carelessness. Basic safety measures, such as life jackets and proper weather monitoring, were lacking. The government should not limit itself to ordering an investigation but must take strict action against those responsible.”
