London, July 25: Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has declined to provide any concrete assurances regarding the future of captain Bruno Guimarães. He stated that while the club wishes to retain the Brazilian midfielder, the final decision regarding a potential transfer is not in his hands.
Following a pre-season friendly match that ended in a 1-1 draw against Gateshead on Saturday, Howe revealed that he has been in constant contact with Guimarães over the past few weeks but refused to disclose any details about their discussions.
Howe commented, “I have had very good conversations with him before, during, and after the World Cup. What we talk about should remain private, but he is a fantastic player and a very good person.”
When asked if he is confident that the midfielder will remain at St. James’ Park, the head coach stated that he cannot make any promises. “I don’t know what’s going to happen with Bruno’s future. I’m not involved in those discussions, so there’s no point in guessing,” he said.
Guimarães is currently on holiday after Brazil’s campaign ended in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 28-year-old is expected to return to Newcastle by the end of this week and will join the team for a pre-season training camp in Spain.
In response to comparisons with the situation surrounding Alexander Isak’s departure from the club last year after months of transfer speculation, Howe emphasized that each situation is different. He believes there is no reason to think that Guimarães will not return for pre-season.
“Bruno is our captain. He has been outstanding both on and off the pitch since joining this football club. Everyone here understands the importance of his contributions. Obviously, we all want him to stay with us. At the moment, there is nothing to suggest he won’t return for training,” Howe added.
