Cortina d’Ampezzo, February 15: Federica Brignone of Italy has taken a commanding lead in the women’s alpine giant slalom at the Milan Cortina Olympics, marking a significant step towards her second gold medal. The 35-year-old, who recently secured her first Olympic gold in the super-G, clocked an impressive time of 1:03.23, positioning herself ahead of the competition.
American skier Mikaela Shiffrin, a two-time Olympic champion, is currently in seventh place, trailing Brignone by over a second. Shiffron is aiming for her first Olympic medal in eight years after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the combined event earlier in the Games.
Brignone, who was the world champion in giant slalom last year, faced a challenging recovery from a broken leg sustained in March, which required surgery and extensive rehabilitation. Her performance today showcased her resilience and skill as she navigated the 51-gate course with ease.
Lena Duerr of Germany is in second place, just 0.34 seconds behind Brignone, while her teammate Sofia Goggia holds third place, 0.46 seconds off the lead. A competitive group follows closely, including defending Olympic champion Sara Hector of Sweden and Thea Louise Stjernesund of Norway, who all recorded the fourth-fastest time at 1:03.97.
Shiffrin’s performance was steady but lacked the speed needed to contend with the leaders. Despite her solid run, she could not match Brignone’s electrifying pace, which included the fastest times in multiple segments of the race.
As Brignone seeks to add to her Olympic medal tally, the competition remains fierce, with Julia Scheib, the current World Cup leader in giant slalom, expressing doubts about anyone catching Brignone’s remarkable performance.
