Guwahati, August 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the state government has begun implementing relief measures for families affected by the recent floods. He stated that immediate assistance and rehabilitation support are being provided at the grassroots level.
In a social media post, CM Sarma emphasized that every relief measure announced by the government is being swiftly executed to ensure timely help for flood-affected families.
“The implementation of every announced relief measure is being expedited on the ground. We are providing immediate assistance, aiding in rehabilitation, and ensuring that our flood-affected families receive the help they deserve,” he said.
The government also announced that damage assessments in flood-affected areas will commence on August 9. Under the relief package, each eligible family will receive interim financial assistance of ₹15,000 to meet immediate needs. The benefits of the ‘Orunodoi Scheme’ have been extended for one month, increasing to ₹2,500, while families in the most affected districts (Sivasagar and Charaideo) will receive an additional ₹10,000.
Additionally, the government has declared a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of deceased individuals without requiring a post-mortem report. Families who lost loved ones in the floods will also receive an extra ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. As part of the relief measures, the state has announced a six-month moratorium on loan repayments, waiving electricity bills and land revenue, and extending the loan repayment period.
Special assistance has also been announced for the reconstruction of damaged Anganwadi centers and Namghars, with ₹1.5 lakh allocated for each damaged Namghar.
To minimize disruptions in education, the government will provide financial assistance to affected students for replacing textbooks, reissuing school uniforms, and providing duplicate copies of essential certificates free of charge.
It is noteworthy that Assam has experienced extensive flooding in recent days, affecting over 168,000 people across 15 districts. The state government continues its relief and rehabilitation efforts through camps, distribution centers, and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas.
