Apple Set to Launch Smart Doorbell with Face ID in 2025

Apple is poised to make a significant entry into the smart home market, with plans to launch its first smart doorbell equipped with Face ID technology in late 2025, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The device represents Apple’s latest foray into integrating cutting-edge technology into everyday home security.

Revolutionizing Home Security with Face ID

The Apple smart doorbell will reportedly feature Face ID functionality, enabling seamless and secure automatic door unlocking. Unlike existing smart doorbells on the market, Apple’s version will leverage its proprietary wireless networking chip, dubbed Proxima, to ensure that all Face ID-related data is processed locally on the device. This privacy-first approach aligns with Apple’s emphasis on user security.

To complement its on-device processing, the smart doorbell will back up data to iCloud, adding a layer of convenience and a potential boost to Apple’s subscription service revenues.

Integration with HomeKit and Smart Locks

While details remain sparse, it is unclear whether Apple will offer its own smart lock system alongside the doorbell or rely on partnerships with third-party manufacturers compatible with its HomeKit ecosystem. The device is expected to support the Thread smart home standard, ensuring broad compatibility within the growing universe of smart home products.

A Broader Smart Home Ecosystem

The smart doorbell is not Apple’s only planned innovation in the smart home arena. The tech giant is reportedly developing a smart home hub to rival Google’s Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Hub. This device will feature a 6-inch touchscreen and run a custom operating system designed to integrate Apple Intelligence, smart home controls, and FaceTime capabilities.

In addition to the doorbell and hub, Apple is expected to refresh its Apple TV and HomePod Mini devices in 2024, signaling a comprehensive push into the smart home market.
