Udaipur, November 2 (Udaipur Kiran) — The 49th Mine Safety Week is being observed from November 2 to 8 under the aegis of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), North West Zone, in collaboration with the Mines Safety Association, Udaipur Region.

As part of this annual initiative, over 400 organized and unorganized mines across nine districts — Udaipur, Sirohi, Jalore, Rajsamand, Salumbar, Pratapgarh, Banswara, Dungarpur, and Chittorgarh — will be inspected to assess safety standards. This year’s campaign places special emphasis on dust-related health hazards and protection from heat, encouraging all mines to strive for a “Zero Accident” target during operations.
The flag-off ceremony for the safety week was held on November 2 at the DGMS office in Udaipur. The event was graced by Director of Mines Safety Tom Mathew, Director of Mines Safety (North West Zone) Vinod Rajak, Director (Mechanical, North West Zone) J.P. Verma, and Deputy Director Vishal Goyal. Mine owners, general managers, agents, and mine managers from across the region attended the event, along with over 50 members from 13 inspection teams.
The ceremony began with the traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by Deputy Director Vishal Goyal outlining the inspection plan. He informed that the 400+ mines would be divided into six categories, and inspections with scoring would be conducted throughout the week. Mines achieving top scores in their respective categories will be honoured and awarded.
Tom Mathew urged all mine operators to actively participate and focus on implementing measures related to the year’s safety theme — “Protection from Dust and Heat.” Vinod Rajak encouraged participants to celebrate the safety week as a festival, ensuring the message reaches every worker. J.P. Verma emphasized adopting innovation and mechanization to enhance safety and productivity.
The coordinator of this year’s Mine Safety Week, Radha Raman, General Manager and Operations Head at Zawar Mines, Hindustan Zinc Limited, expressed gratitude to all participants and reaffirmed the Mines Safety Association’s commitment to the successful organization of the event.
The program concluded with the safety pledge, followed by the flag-off of inspection teams from the DGMS office campus. These teams will inspect mines across the Udaipur region throughout the week.
