4 new camera features Apple may add to the iPhone 16 Pro models

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 16 series by the end of this year. The upcoming lineup is expected to include four new smartphone models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The Pro version of the upcoming iPhone series is also rumored to come with new features such as a larger screen , a special trigger and more.

According to a report published by 9to5Mac, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to make several major improvements to the camera hardware of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models. Here are four new camera upgrades that could be coming to the iPhone 16 Pro smartphone.

Improved ultra-wide camera

According to rumors, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could use an improved 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera this year. This should be a significant improvement over the current 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 15 Pro models.

This upgrade is intended to improve performance in various shooting scenarios, especially in low-light conditions. Images captured with the new ultra-wide camera may show more detail and greater color accuracy. Higher resolution also offers more flexibility in editing and post-production.

In addition, the iPhone 16 Pro’s ultra-wide 48-megapixel camera can also lead to significant improvements in spatial video recording. This feature, which utilizes both the main lens and the ultra-wide lens, could allow the iPhone 16 Pro to capture spatial 4K videos. In comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro is limited to 1080p spatial video recording.

Tetra Prism lens for iPhone 16 Pro

The latest iPhone 15 Pro Max features a new tetraprism camera design that offers 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom. In keeping with the upcoming iPhone 16 series, Apple plans to expand this improved tetraprism camera to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro models. This means that both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max offer at least 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom.

There are also rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro Max could come with a “periscope and ultra-long telephoto lens combination.” This technology can potentially enable more than 5x optical zoom.

Improved lens flare control

A common problem for most iPhone users is the perception of glare when taking photos in bright light. This results in unexpected artifacts and internal reflections in images. While this issue is common with most cameras on the market, Apple is reportedly working on a solution for the iPhone 16 Pro.

Apple is rumored to be testing a new atomic layer coating (ALD) lens technology for the iPhone 16 Pro models. This anti-reflective coating can be applied to the iPhone 16 Pro camera lens to reduce internal reflections.
If this rumor is true, users can expect fewer unexpected artifacts in images taken with the iPhone 16 Pro, especially in brightly lit scenes.

Sony’s new flagship sensor improves low-light photogaphy

The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to include Sony’s new main camera sensor, which is said to improve low-light photography.

According to the report, Sony’s latest multi-layer sensor technology separates the photodiodes and pixel transistors (which are usually grouped into a single layer). This separation allows the photodiodes responsible for capturing the light to be significantly larger while maintaining the overall pixel size.

Sony claims this new sensor captures twice as much light as existing camera sensors. Improved light capture and noise reduction provide iPhone users with better photos in all conditions.

However, it remains unclear whether this next-gen Sony sensor will be used in both iPhone 16 Pro models. An insider on Chinese social media platform Weibo has suggested that only the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have this improved hardware camera sensor.
