Udaipur, July 16: Police have detained 11 persons after a video surfaced showing a man allegedly being hung upside down from a tree and assaulted in Udaipur’s Sayra police station area. The incident was reportedly linked to an alleged violation of a community-imposed liquor ban.
According to police, the incident took place in Kamol village under the Sayra police station limits. After the video emerged on social media on Tuesday, police took cognisance of the matter, registered a case and launched an investigation.
Sayra Station House Officer Kanaram Sirvi said the incident occurred on May 12. Community elders in Kamol village had reportedly enforced a liquor prohibition rule at the local level. According to the police, Choonaram Gameti allegedly consumed alcohol on May 11 and returned home in an intoxicated condition.
Police said that when his father objected, the youth allegedly misbehaved with him. Allegations of assaulting his father have also been made against him.
The following day, members of the community reportedly held a meeting in the Bhil settlement regarding the incident. Choonaram was allegedly fined ₹11,000 for violating the liquor ban.
According to the complaint, one of his legs was tied with a rope and he was hung upside down from a banyan tree, following which he was assaulted. Someone present at the scene recorded a video of the incident, which later surfaced on social media on Tuesday.
After the video came to light, police treated the matter seriously, detained 11 accused persons and registered a case against them. Further investigation is underway.
