London, July 4: In the 2026 Wimbledon tournament, second seed Alexander Zverev secured a victory against American player Marcos Giron, winning 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4 on Saturday. This marks Zverev’s fourth appearance in the fourth round at the All England Club in his career.
After clinching his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, the German player arrived at Wimbledon with high confidence, although he admitted that grass is his least favorite surface. Historically, he has never advanced beyond the fourth round at SW19, but his recent performances suggest he may be ready to progress further this time.
Zverev dominated the first set with a strong serve, while Giron improved his game in the second set. The American faced no break points and managed to force a tie-break. Zverev remained composed, saving two break points and performing well in the tie-break, putting him just one set away from victory.
In the third set, Zverev broke early and won the second game. Although Giron fought back to break at 4-2, Zverev quickly regained the lead and wrapped up the match in 2 hours and 34 minutes.
The 29-year-old Zverev delivered another impressive performance, hitting 17 aces and winning 54 out of 70 points (77 percent) on his first serve. Despite Giron’s persistent pressure, Zverev maintained his undefeated record against him, having won all five encounters and 13 out of the 14 sets played between them.
This victory places Zverev among Germany’s top players, becoming the third German man in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon ‘Round of 16’ at least four times, joining three-time champion Boris Becker (who achieved this 12 times) and 1991 champion Michael Stich (who reached the last 16 five times).
