New Delhi, June 7: Fifteen-year-old cricketer Vaibhav Suryaanshi’s father will be traveling with him to Sri Lanka for the upcoming tri-series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has arranged for his father’s accompaniment. Additionally, Vaibhav’s father has been given the option to join them for the UK and Ireland tour as well.
BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia confirmed this arrangement, stating, “Vaibhav Suryaanshi’s father is arriving in Sri Lanka today, and we will offer him the option to travel to the UK and Ireland if he wishes.” Vaibhav is set to represent India A in the tri-series starting on June 9.
Saikia further explained that due to Vaibhav’s young age, these arrangements are being made to ensure he feels comfortable in a new environment. Vaibhav has also been selected for the Indian T20 team for the Ireland-England series and the Asian Games.
The BCCI Secretary emphasized that since Vaibhav has previously traveled with under-19, junior, or sub-junior teams, he is familiar with that environment. However, being with senior players will provide him with a new experience. At just 15 years old, the BCCI aims to ensure he feels comfortable and secure.
Saikia noted that having his parents with him will provide Vaibhav with mental support, helping him feel more at ease. This decision reflects the board’s commitment to ensuring that players like Suryaanshi do not feel isolated in a new team setting. He is on the verge of becoming India’s youngest international cricketer, a record currently held by Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at the age of 16 years and 205 days in 1989.
Saikia reiterated that the board’s responsibility is to ensure that no player feels uncomfortable or alone in a new environment, stating, “It is our basic principle to help them adjust to the senior team gradually.”
