Some users of Apple’s new iPhone Duo are reporting significant issues including cracks along the screen and audible crunching sounds when opening the device. These complaints surfaced shortly after the foldable smartphone went on sale globally.

Apple has confirmed awareness of the problems, stating that a “small number” of devices are affected by a display malfunction. The company has encouraged users experiencing these issues to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Reports of cracks started appearing on social media and forums, including Reddit, shortly after the Duo was released. One user from Australia described an incident where their phone cracked just six hours after purchase. They reported feeling resistance around the hinge before hearing a crack as they opened the device. The user claimed their local Apple store replaced the device on the spot.

Another customer reported a similar experience, noting they heard a cracking noise that preceded the screen malfunction. Apple has not disclosed how many units may be defective and some images of damaged devices may not be genuine.

Francisco Jeronimo, a technology analyst at IDC, remarked on the situation, indicating caution in interpreting these reports due to their limited number. He cited past experiences with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, which also experienced screen issues during its initial release in 2019. Jeronimo stated, “What matters now is how the company responds,” emphasizing that Apple’s handling of this issue will impact consumer confidence.

In a statement, Apple said they are aware of the issue impacting a “small number” of units and reiterated the importance of contacting their support services for those affected. Demand for the iPhone Duo has been described as extraordinary, with reported problems.

As Apple prepares for further releases in 28 additional markets planned for October 30, the company is under pressure to clarify warranty and support policies related to these screen issues. The iPhone Duo, priced starting at £1,999 ($2,668), marks Apple’s first major redesign in nearly two decades, following the transition of leadership from Tim Cook to John Ternus in September.

The unfolding situation has led to mixed reactions from experts. Ben Wood from CCS expressed a cautious view on the reported screen issues, stating that there is currently no clear evidence of a widespread problem. Meanwhile, Apple continues to evaluate user feedback and the performance of the iPhone Duo.
