Washington, June 11: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a ban on Cuba’s state energy company, Union Cuba-Petroleo (CUPET), on Thursday. This action is part of a broader effort to pressure the Cuban government under President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14404.
Rubio stated on the social media platform X, “I am imposing a ban on Cuba’s state energy company, Union Cuba-Petroleo (CUPET), under President Trump’s EO 14404. The communist ruling class in Cuba has used energy as a means of social control and corrupt profit-making.”
He accused the Cuban government of stealing and hoarding available fuel for decades, which has been used for Castro’s private jet and by security forces to suppress the Cuban people. He highlighted that while the Cuban people suffered through blackouts and waited weeks to refuel their cars, the government illuminated empty tourist hotels and transported people for fake protests and political stunts.
Rubio emphasized, “President Trump wants a new future for the Cuban people with greater economic and political freedom and opportunities. Until then, we will continue to target the communist government’s ability to exploit its energy trade to advance its corrupt agenda and violently repress the Cuban people.”
As a result of this decision, any US-owned assets associated with the company will be frozen, and American citizens and entities will be prohibited from doing business with it. This ban is part of a larger strategy to increase pressure on Cuba’s communist officials, following previous sanctions imposed on various entities and individuals in the country.
