Junagadh, February 23: The historic Uparkot Fort, located at the foothills of the Girnar hills in Gujarat, is becoming a major attraction for tourists. Under the initiative ‘Heritage and Development’, the state government is preserving and revitalizing this ancient site.
Believed to have been built around 2300 years ago by Emperor Chandragupta Maurya in 319 BC, the fort had deteriorated over the centuries. However, the Gujarat government has invested millions in its restoration and tourism development, adhering to the mantra of ‘Heritage and Development’. After nearly three years of restoration work, the fort has now reopened to visitors.
Post-redevelopment, tourists are not only exploring Junagadh’s rich history but also enjoying its natural beauty. Tourist Monil Jinjuwadia remarked that Uparkot has undergone “100 percent development”. He noted that the facilities have significantly improved compared to before. Another visitor, Hina, expressed that the fort’s appearance has completely transformed, providing better amenities for tourists. She highlighted the ease of access with the new ropeway and improved transportation arrangements.
The state government has also restored historical sites within the fort complex, including the Kadi Vav, Navghan Kuvo, and Ranakdevi Palace. Additionally, preparations are underway to launch a light and sound show to offer visitors a memorable experience.
SDM Charan Singh Gohil of Junagadh stated that the pond, palace, cannons, and the Queen’s Palace are major attractions. He emphasized that continuous development is taking place due to the government’s efforts, with a laser sound show expected to start soon.
Apart from Uparkot Fort, the Gujarat government has made remarkable advancements in other tourist destinations such as the Girnar Ropeway, Mahabat Maqbara, and Bhanvanath Temple. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, these initiatives to promote heritage tourism are empowering Junagadh both economically and socially. As a result of these efforts, Junagadh is establishing a strong identity as a prominent tourist destination, not just in Gujarat but across the country and internationally.
