Beijing, June 17: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated during a press conference organized by the Chinese State Council Information Office that the current state of multilateralism appears ineffective. He emphasized that this is not due to the lack of importance of the United Nations, but rather a failure to respect and uphold its reputation and role. The return of wild law, he noted, is not because the UN Charter has become obsolete, but because its effective enforcement has not been ensured.
Wang Yi highlighted that humanity has faced unprecedented devastation due to the chaos of wild law over the past 80 years. The United Nations was established to separate the international community from multilateralism in the aftermath of two world wars.
He further stated that in the face of continuously emerging global challenges, immediate action is required to implement the duties of the UN Charter, uphold the equality of sovereignty, and adhere to international legal governance while opposing power politics. Support for the UN’s central role is essential, and efforts should be made to gather global equalities through the UN to address ongoing deficiencies in global governance. Additionally, there is a need to advance UN reforms to enhance representation and expression for countries in the Global South.
Wang Yi reaffirmed that as the first country to sign the UN Charter, China is ready to enhance the UN’s reputation through global governance initiatives and work towards the revitalization of the UN in collaboration with various nations.
