Trump Claims US-Iran Peace Deal is Close

Washington, June 8: President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that the United States and Iran are very close to reaching a peace agreement. This is not the first time the President has made such claims regarding a ceasefire agreement, having previously asserted that negotiations between the two nations were in their final stages.

In an interview with NBC, Trump mentioned that while there are still some disagreements, they do not seem critical. He noted that Iran has already accepted a condition promising not to develop nuclear weapons. However, Trump clarified that he wants Iran to also relinquish its rights to acquire such weapons through other means.

According to Italian news agency Adnkronos, Iran initially resisted this condition but later ceased its opposition. Trump also urged Israel to conduct more targeted surgical strikes against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.

In the interview, he expressed his desire for improved living conditions for the people in Lebanon and emphasized the need for more precise attacks against Hezbollah. Following an Israeli raid in Beirut on Sunday, two individuals were reported killed and eleven others injured. Official data indicates that since the new fighting began on March 2, over 3,560 people have died in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon.

The Israeli military reported that 29 soldiers and one civilian contractor have been killed in Lebanon. Trump mentioned that he has never spoken directly with Iran’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, but noted that the Iranian leader is participating in the process of reaching an agreement to end the war.

In the NBC interview, Trump described Mojtaba Khamenei as more intelligent than his father, Ali Khamenei, who died in an attack by the US and Israel on February 28. He characterized Mojtaba Khamenei as a courageous individual, despite being seriously injured.

Trump reiterated that he is ready for direct talks with the new Supreme Leader, stating, “If he wanted, I would do it, but I have never spoken to him directly.” Following an agreement to end the war that began on February 28, the US will collaborate with Iran to recover and dispose of its enriched uranium.

However, if no agreement is reached, the US will independently recover uranium to weaken the Iranian military further. Trump stated, “If we reach an agreement that justifies us, we will cooperate. We will use our equipment and eliminate the uranium, whether on-site or elsewhere. But we will not allow anyone to shoot at us, okay?”

He concluded by saying, “If we do not reach an agreement, we will strictly eliminate the uranium stockpile through military means.”
