Udaipur, June 18: U.S. President Donald Trump described the agreement with Iran as a historic diplomatic achievement during a press conference following the G7 summit in France. He asserted that the deal has averted widespread war in the Middle East, reopened the Strait of Hormuz, and permanently prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, “On Sunday, we reached a deal with Iran that achieved everything we wanted.” He warned that without this deal, military actions could have continued indefinitely, leading to instability in the Gulf and disruptions in the global energy market.
He linked the agreement to a drop in oil prices and a surge in the stock market, noting that whenever peace talks were discussed, investors responded positively. Trump dismissed conservative critics who argued for maintaining military pressure on Iran.
Highlighting his decision to eliminate Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020, Trump declared, “No one is more powerful than me.” He reiterated that the agreement would prevent Iran from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons, stating that Iran has committed not to pursue nuclear arms.
The President added that economic relief for Iran would depend on its behavior, saying, “If they do the right thing, people can invest, but we are not putting money in.”
Defending the agreement, Trump acknowledged it is a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that is crucial. According to an analysis published in The New York Times, the deal signifies a shift from military confrontation to a framework ensuring compliance through deterrence and dialogue.
American media reported that the Trump administration is betting on the notion that the threat of future military action will be sufficient to enforce the agreement without the need for a formal treaty. The Wall Street Journal noted that reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing risks to global oil supply could yield significant economic benefits beyond the Middle East. Trump expressed hope that this agreement could lay the groundwork for a larger regional deal, stating, “As I told world leaders this week, I hope this peace agreement will be the beginning of a very big deal across the Middle East.”
