Mumbai, June 17: Renowned Hindi cinema actress Naseem Bano, often referred to as the ‘Beauty Queen’ of her era, captivated audiences with her stunning beauty and remarkable acting skills. Her contributions extended beyond the silver screen, playing a pivotal role in the personal lives of her family, particularly in the marriage of her daughter Saira Bano to legendary actor Dilip Kumar. On her death anniversary, we explore her life and career.
Naseem Bano was born on July 4, 1916, in Old Delhi as Roshan Ara Begum. Her mother aspired for her to become a doctor, but Naseem was drawn to the film industry from a young age. It is said that she was inspired by films and artists, leading to a chance encounter with renowned filmmaker Sohrab Modi during a film shoot, who offered her a role in his film. Initially, her mother rejected the offer, but Naseem’s determination eventually won her over.
In 1935, Naseem Bano made her acting debut with the film ‘Khoon Ka Khoon.’ She gained widespread recognition in 1939 with the film ‘Pukar,’ where she portrayed the character of Noor Jahan, earning acclaim for both her beauty and performance. This marked the beginning of her rise as one of the most popular actresses in Hindi cinema.
Throughout her career, Naseem Bano featured in several memorable films, including ‘Talaq,’ ‘Vasanti,’ ‘Chal Chal Re Naujawan,’ ‘Anokhi Ada,’ ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ and ‘Shabistan.’ She was among the highest-paid actresses of her time, with a fan base that extended beyond India. Naseem Bano married Mian Ehsan-ul-Haq and had two children, one of whom, Saira Bano, later became a prominent star in Hindi cinema. Reports suggest that Saira was a huge admirer of actor Dilip Kumar from childhood. When rumors of Saira’s association with actor Rajendra Kumar surfaced, Naseem Bano grew concerned.
It is reported that she facilitated discussions between Saira and Dilip Kumar, which eventually led to their marriage in 1966. Naseem Bano is believed to have played a crucial role in guiding this relationship.
After a long and successful career in films, Naseem Bano stepped away from acting. She passed away at the age of 85 on June 18, 2002, in Mumbai.
