Islamabad, May 11: The death toll from a terrorist attack on a police checkpoint in Bannu district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has risen to 15, according to local media reports on Monday.
A militant group known as ‘Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan (IMP)’ has claimed responsibility for the bombing on social media.
Reports indicate that the armed group rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the Fateh Khel police checkpoint late Saturday night. The powerful explosion completely destroyed the checkpoint.
Following the blast, the attackers opened fire from multiple directions, resulting in several hours of heavy gunfire and additional explosions, causing widespread panic in the area.
Bannu’s Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sajjad Khan stated that there were 18 police personnel stationed at the checkpoint at the time of the attack. He confirmed that 15 officers were martyred on the spot, while three others sustained serious injuries. The blast also caused significant damage to nearby homes and buildings.
In response to the attack, emergency services were activated at three major hospitals in Bannu. Rescue 1122 teams arrived at the scene to transport the injured and deceased to medical facilities.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned Afghanistan’s Charge d’Affaires on Monday to lodge a strong protest regarding the attack that occurred on May 9 in Bannu. According to the ministry, 15 police officers were killed in the attack, along with four others injured, including a civilian.
In recent months, there has been a surge in terrorist attacks in Pakistan’s northwestern regions bordering Afghanistan, particularly targeting security forces and police. Earlier this month, a police vehicle in Bannu was also hit by a rocket attack, resulting in the death of one constable and injuries to two others.
