Coimbatore, July 27: Tamil Nadu’s Revenue Minister has stated that Karnataka will not be allowed to proceed with the proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir project. He reiterated the state government’s firm stance on protecting Tamil Nadu’s rights over the Cauvery river water.
K.A. Sengottaiyan emphasized Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the Mekedatu project, declaring that “not a single brick will be laid for the Mekedatu dam. Chief Minister Vijay will not permit it.”
Speaking to reporters at Coimbatore Airport, the minister also addressed the state’s opposition to the NEET exam, proposed metro rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai, the disqualification issue of AIADMK legislators, and the upcoming state budget.
Sengottaiyan praised Chief Minister Joseph Vijay for providing good governance and his commitment to accelerating infrastructure development across Tamil Nadu. He mentioned that the Chief Minister aims to strengthen urban transport by introducing metro rail in Coimbatore and Madurai to meet the growing needs of both cities.
The state government has already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting approval and support from the central government for the metro rail projects in both cities. Sengottaiyan expressed confidence that the Chief Minister is dedicated to planned development throughout Tamil Nadu.
Regarding the disqualification of four AIADMK legislators, he noted that a representation was submitted to the Speaker demanding a direct inquiry in the presence of AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. He expressed hope that the Speaker would make a fair decision after investigating the matter.
On the NEET issue, he stated that the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu are a priority. Reiterating the state government’s position, he mentioned that Chief Minister Vijay is fully committed to securing an exemption from NEET for Tamil Nadu students.
The minister indicated that the Chief Minister has clearly communicated to the Prime Minister that the examination adversely affects the state’s students and has appealed to reconsider the policy. According to the minister, the government will continue to adopt all constitutional and legal options to protect the interests of students.
When asked about the upcoming Tamil Nadu budget, the minister declined to provide any information, stating that it would remain confidential until presented in the Assembly. He assured that the provisions would become clear after the budget is presented.
