Ranchi, August 14: The hunger strike by students protesting against irregularities in the JPSC-JSSC competitive examinations in Ranchi has entered its 21st day. Despite heavy rains on Thursday evening, hundreds of students remained steadfast at the protest site. Student leaders Devendra Nath Mahto and Umme Habiba have appealed to Chief Minister Hemant Soren to address the students’ demands promptly.
In an emotional plea, both leaders urged the Chief Minister to engage in dialogue with the students and find solutions to their issues. Devendra Nath Mahto, who is currently hospitalized at Ranchi Sadar Hospital, continues his hunger strike for the twelfth day. He was admitted after his health deteriorated during a protest outside the assembly. Despite receiving medical treatment, he has refused to end his strike.
Devendra appealed to CM Soren, stating, “Chief Minister, please listen to the students. Sit with them, understand their problems, and take immediate steps for resolution.” He emphasized that whether he survives or not, the essence of democracy must prevail.
He clarified that their struggle and hunger strike will continue until their demands are met, asserting that the movement is not just his personal fight but a matter concerning the future and rights of a large number of students and youth.
Devendra has also requested the hospital management to allow him to return to the protest site at Jaipal Singh Stadium. Supporters of Devendra have demanded his release from the hospital.
Meanwhile, Umme Habiba, also on hunger strike and currently receiving treatment at Sadar Hospital, released a video appealing to the Chief Minister. She expressed, “We are in immense pain. We are all your children. Please listen to us. We believe that if you engage in conversation, our problems will be resolved.”
Habiba’s health had deteriorated while she was on hunger strike at Jaipal Singh Stadium, leading to her hospitalization.
