Washington, July 16: Indian-American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam has emphasized the importance of a robust India-US partnership in addressing current global challenges. He stated that the United States must foster good relations with India to effectively tackle these issues.
Representing Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, Subramanyam highlighted the need for Washington to maintain strong ties with New Delhi and collaborate with allied nations to confront global challenges.
“We must ensure that we maintain strong relations between India and the US. It is crucial that we work together with our allies to face the world’s greatest challenges and counter countries that present themselves as our rivals,” he remarked.
Subramanyam expressed that strengthening relations between Washington and New Delhi is a top priority. He also stressed that the US should not isolate any of its allied nations.
“Our main focus is on enhancing India-US relations. We do not want to alienate any of our partner countries,” he added.
He criticized the Trump administration for allegedly damaging India-US relations, noting that tariffs and other policy measures did not contribute positively to the strategic partnership between the two nations.
“This administration’s foreign policy has been a complete failure and has harmed India-US relations,” he stated.
The Congressman responded to questions regarding the state of India-US relations following a meeting between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that the Trump administration’s approach towards other countries has not been consistently favorable.
“It depends on what mood the President wakes up in,” he commented.
Subramanyam also expressed concerns about the increasing contacts between the Trump administration and Pakistan, particularly with Army Chief General Asim Munir.
“I have publicly voiced my concerns about Asim Munir and the developments in Pakistan several times,” he said. “Ultimately, we must hold our allies accountable, including Pakistan, and question what has happened to democracy there.”
He reiterated his criticism of the Trump administration’s trade policies, stating that tariffs and other decisions have made it difficult to maintain momentum in bilateral relations.
“The tariffs imposed by the President and some of his other actions have not proven productive in advancing India-US relations,” he remarked.
Over the past two decades, cooperation between India and the US in defense, trade, technology, energy, and the Indo-Pacific region has steadily increased, with regular high-level meetings and collaboration through the Quad platform alongside Australia and Japan.
